At first glance the above picture might look like the movie set for Sanford and Son. In reality it is the back yard of a member of my church. I first met Sam (not his real name) about 10 years ago. At that time he had a small building out back where he stored a few collectibles that he had acquired. During the past 10 years his one building has turned into 10 buildings and his 5 acre lot is dotted with even more stuff. What does he collect; well virtually anything. He collects things as small as cracker Jacks toys and as large as army jeeps and airplanes. He has hundreds of pieces of antique farm equipment. No, nothing is for sale. As far as I know Sam simply enjoys collecting stuff. His back yard is a museum of early Americana.
It would be hard to place a dollar value on his collection. However, I would imagine at an antique auction he would do quite well. The most disturbing thing to me is that at one time or another I have owned and thrown away most of the stuff that Sam now considers treasures.
