I must confess, I love Amazon.com. For me, it is almost like second nature to go to Amazon.com find what I want, order it and expect it in the mail in a couple of days. I caught myself asking the other day "what in the world did we do before Amazon.com?"
Well, some of us can certainly remember the Sears Catalog. Like Amazon, it had almost anything you wanted. However, unlike Amazon, it would take weeks and often months for your purchase to arrive. However, there was one thing you could buy from the Sears Catalog that you still cannot purchase on Amazon.com (at least as far as I know.) From the Sears Catalog you could purchase a house. It would arrive in kit form to the nearest railroad station where you could pick it up and assemble it on your lot with the help of friends and neighbors.
There were a number of floor plans and price ranges. The house above was a simple 4 room plan. This house kit in 1920 would have cost between $200 - $500 dollars. This house sits on the property of a friend and church member. It is slowly being restored.
Amazon. com may eventually offer homes for sale but I doubt that they can match the price.
There is yet another feature that Amazon simply cannot match. In the 1920's everything was recycled. When the new catalog would come the old one proved to be very useful in the little building out back.
